Celebrating 60 years in the
structural steel industry in 2024!

1964-1970
The Early Years in Caledon
Shannon Steel initially operated from a small workshop in the village of Caledon, fabricating miscellaneous items and bridge railings for the Department of Highways. Shannon Steel was given a “year supply contract” with this department for two years. Gradually Shannon Steel started to get involved in small buildings, specializing in service stations for a variety of Oil Companies. Approximately 10 to 15 of the first McDonald’s restaurants were fabricated and erected by Shannon Steel, when the “Golden Arches” moved into Canada.
1970-1980
Moving to Orangeville
In 1976 the operation was moved from Caledon to Orangeville into a new plant and office building. By that time the company had established itself solidly in the building industry as a fabricator and erector of structural steel and open web steel joists. That new location in Orangeville is where Shannon Steel is currently situated on the corner of Robb Boulevard and Centennial Road.
1980-1990
Focusing On Our Strengths
During the 1980s, Shannon Steel concentrated on its core strengths in the industrial and commercial sectors, delivering reliable and high-quality structural steel solutions. This focus allowed the company to attract a steady stream of new clients while fostering loyalty among returning customers, solidifying its reputation as a trusted partner in the industry.
1990-2000
Expanding Our Portfolio
In the late 1990s, Shannon Steel began expanding its customer portfolio, taking on projects that grew in both scale and complexity. Transitioning from primarily smaller buildings to larger structures, the company successfully entered the retail, hospitality, and automotive sectors. This evolution showcased their adaptability and commitment to meeting the diverse needs of their clients across various industries.
2000-2010
Embracing a New Chapter
In early 2004 the president, Nicolaas Schaafsma retired and his son Mark Schaafsma took over company management. This began the second generation of Shannon Steel’s ownership.
2010-2020
Building Lasting Relationships
As Shannon Steel took on more projects over the next ten years, they remained dedicated to nurturing strong relationships with both customers and suppliers. By prioritizing open communication and mutual respect, they built lasting partnerships. Integrity has always been, and always will be a top priority for the company, ensuring every project—whether large or small—is handled with the same level of care and commitment.
